People also ask

When will Cyprus finally join Schengen?

Soon. People have been saying so since 2007. The latest version (10 Oct 2026): “in full during 2027”.

Is Cyprus in Schengen yet?

No. As of 14 October 2026, still no. In the EU since 2004, plugged into the Schengen Information System since 2023 — and passports are still checked on flights to Europe.

Will Cyprus join Schengen in 2026?

That was the promise. In October 2026 the target officially moved to 2027. It also needs a unanimous vote of the EU Council.

Why isn’t Cyprus in Schengen?

Mainly the divided island and the Green Line, which Nicosia refuses to treat as a border. Plus a long tradition of moving deadlines.

Can I visit Cyprus with a Schengen visa?

Usually yes — with a double- or multiple-entry visa, up to 90 days in 180. Single-entry won’t do. Check Cyprus’ foreign ministry before you travel.

Do days in Cyprus count towards Schengen 90/180?

No — Cyprus isn’t in Schengen. The one upside of waiting.

Every promise in order — with sources

The same timeline as plain text: who said it, when, and by what deadline.

“Not before 2010 — but we’ll be ready at the right moment”

· George Lillikas, Foreign Minister of Cyprus

Promised deadline: ≈ 2010 Deadline missed

The minister told parliament that Cyprus would not be able to join Schengen before 2010: it needed new infrastructure and a new airport with separate Schengen gates. But the process had started, so the country would be ready “at the right moment”.

“we are ready at the right moment to take the step of joining the Schengen area”

The new Larnaca airport opened in 2009. The right moment has yet to arrive.

Campaign promise: Schengen by 2026

· Nikos Christodoulides, candidate, then President of Cyprus

Promised deadline: 2026 Moved

Schengen was one of Christodoulides’ campaign pledges; shortly after taking office (28 Feb 2023) he named 2026 as the target year, and has repeatedly referred back to that promise since.

Approximate date: sources give the year, not the exact day.

“Cyprus to join Schengen area by 2025”

· Nikos Christodoulides, President of Cyprus

Promised deadline: 2025 Deadline missed

At the Beyond Sea and Sun conference in Nicosia, the president said all political concerns about the ceasefire line had been addressed and only technical details remained — to be finished by the end of 2025.

“We will join the Schengen zone in 2026”

· Nikos Christodoulides, President of Cyprus

Promised deadline: 2026 Moved

Four months after “by 2025”, the target quietly moved: technical work by the end of 2025, actual accession in 2026.

“We will join the Schengen zone in 2026.”

Two months later, fact-checkers at CIReN rated this claim “Misleading”.

Brussels believes too: “within 2026”

· Magnus Brunner, EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration

Promised deadline: 2026 Moved

The Commissioner said Cyprus could join this year if the technical and institutional evaluations went well — “without compromising Schengen’s high security standards”.

A rare case of “any minute now” coming from Brussels rather than Nicosia.

“We’ve ticked all the boxes”

· Cyprus foreign ministry sources, speaking anonymously to Cyprus Mail

Promised deadline: 2026 Moved

The ministry says technical readiness by end-2025 was achieved. But 2026 is no longer “this year” — it’s now “our goal”. The Commission is cautious: the timeline depends on implementing its recommendations.

“We've ticked all the boxes.”

On the Green Line: “we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”

New season: “in full during 2027”

· Nicholas Ioannides, Deputy Minister for Migration

Promised deadline: 2027 Waiting

On CyBC radio: the government now expects full accession in 2027. First, six outstanding actions must be closed by early November and the Commission notified of technical readiness.

“Cyprus expects to join the Schengen area in full during 2027”

Exactly one year later than promised. A classic of the genre.
